Escaped Jeepney in Funafuti

  • 2 February 2014

How did a Filipino jeepney end up plying the streets of Funafuti Atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a long way from home?  This was the question I asked when I came across it, parked in the back streets.  After all, there’s not that much length of road on Funafuti for this jeepney to go for a spin.

I think I’ve found the answer as to who brought it here, but not the how or why.  Back in 2005, the Manila Times newspaper reported that it was imported by an expat Filipino .

Other travellers to Tuvalu have also captured photos of the jeepney.  You can see it in this gallery (which looks like a gallery maintained by Filipino expats in Tuvalu), or on this blog post from March 2013 by a Norwegian traveller.
